Same Old Game
by OS Magazine Rating: 10

With their second CD release, "Same Old Game", CN'TB hasn't lost a step in their lively performances that make bodies move. The title track to the CD shows this. "Same Old Game" punches at you with the Wilhite's guitar talents as well as Luke's funk-inspired vocals. Colleen and Sara bring it all together. Outside of Luke's lead vocals, Colleen and Sara stand out well on their own doing leads. "Guilty of the Same" features Stotts on lead vocals with a strong voice reminiscent of the great Shirley Bassey and music even more wicked than Blues Traveler on a good night. Heneghan adds contrast to the vocals with the slower and soulful "Aaron". Heneghan's vocals are very Lillith Fair in sound, making you just want to ignite your lighter and hold it high. While Chubby Nothin' and the Bone may not have landed that major recording contract, they are still exploding nonetheless. You can find them doing frequent performances at venues such as the Elbo Room and Cubby Bear. In my opinion, it's all a matter of time before CN'TB is seen accepting a Grammy for talent like this.

On their longplayer, Same Old Game, Chubby Nothin' and The Bone dip their fingers into all sorts of musical genres, but the bedrock of the group's sound on its second full-length is thick bass lines and tight grooves. And though the quintet proves equally adept at mid-tempo ballads like "Aaron," they're at their absolute best when they play it fast and loose on funky tracks like "Dance The Ugly" and "Hit The Wall." Only musical restlessness prevents Same Old Game from achieving a consistent tone.

"Same Old Game" by Chubby Nothin' & The Bone is anything but the same old game. This funky blues-influenced rock album stands on a level all its own. With a groove that dares you to keep still, this album doesn't often let go of the listener. Even though it's not exactly new musical ground, Chubby Nothin' & The Bone have perfected their sound and created a niche that only they can fill. All three lead singers provide extremely emotive vocals, along with some amazing harmonies. Musically, it's like a train ride at 100 MPH. It starts chugging along and there's no escape. Not that you'd want one. Although virtually every aspect of the album is top-notch, the bass is truly amazing. Mike Wilhite provides an other-worldly funk to the songs and is one of the best bassists I've heard. "Same Old Game" is one of those albums that is so good it's hard to find the strongest songs. With killer tracks like "Guilty Of The Same," "Love Take Hold," "Hard Walker," and "Sincerity" it's impossible to pick a favorite track. There's only one song that isn't in the race ("Aaron"), although on a different album it might easily take that title. The lyrics tend to keep to the standards, but the music and occasional comic tidbit more than make up for that. "Same Old Game" has the quality production to match the songs. Every track sounds awesome. The production, like everything else with the album, is virtually flawless. Chubby Nothin' & The Bone have done a tremendous job of translating the high energy feel of their songs.

The new CD by Chubby Nothing and the Bone, Same Old Game far exceeds the boring, repetitive B.S. that is pop music today! This soulful, melodious funk is sure to please from the youngest of kids to the oldest of folgies! The music ranges from shit-kicking good funk, to a meaningful slow groove. It accomodates every mood! It's like nothing you've ever heard before, and if I was president of the world, I would make it a mandatory purchase! It just makes ya feel real nice!
